Aussie Habitats & Food Chains Unit — Years 3–4 Science
A complete Years 3–4 Science unit exploring Australian habitats, food chains, food webs and ecosystem balance. Includes ready-to-use teaching guidance, student activities, assessment support, differentiation materials, slides, posters and print-ready classroom files.
A ready-to-use full science unit exploring Australian habitats, food chains, food webs and interdependence, designed for Years 3–4 students.
The Aussie Habitats & Food Chains Unit is a comprehensive Years 3–4 Science resource designed to help students explore how living things in Australian habitats depend on each other to survive. The unit focuses on Australian habitats, producers, consumers, decomposers, food chains, food webs, ecosystem balance and human impacts.
Designed primarily for Year 4, with support for Years 3–4 composite classes, this Premium Unit Pack gives teachers a structured 6-lesson sequence plus an optional extension lesson. Students investigate familiar Australian habitats such as eucalypt forests, wetlands, grasslands, deserts, tropical rainforests and urban bushland, while building scientific vocabulary and learning to explain feeding relationships using clear examples.
This resource saves planning time by providing a complete teaching pathway, ready-to-use student activities, assessment support, differentiation materials, activity cards, teaching slides and classroom posters. It is especially useful for classroom teachers, relief teachers, homeschool educators and schools wanting a practical, Australian-context Science unit that supports curriculum-connected teaching without requiring teachers to build the unit from scratch.
The unit supports Australian Curriculum Version 9.0 Science, with a strong connection to AC9S4U01, where students explain the roles and interactions of consumers, producers and decomposers within a habitat and how food chains represent feeding relationships. It also includes Year 3 support through AC9S3U01, making it suitable for composite classes where some students may need additional scaffolding.
Students will practise identifying habitats, building food chains, interpreting food webs, explaining interdependence, predicting what happens when part of a food web changes, and using scientific vocabulary in written responses. The pack also includes First Nations ecological knowledge connections, sustainability links, formative exit tickets and a summative assessment task.
